Famous people who lived in this part of Mayfair

Famous Mayfair residents include HRH Queen Elizabeth II, who was born in Bruton Street and lived in Mayfair as an infant. The area has also been home to numerous British Prime Ministers from the 18th century to the 21st century, including: Benjamin Disraeli, who lived in Curzon Street; Sir Robert Peel, who was responsible for the creation of the Metropolitan Police Force; William Pitt the younger, Britain’s great war leader and the man who created income tax; and Winston Churchill, who lived in various properties and sheltered in the disused underground station in Down Street during the war. French composer Frederick Handel called Mayfair his home for the last 30 years of his life.

History Mayfair

Mayfair has, for the last two centuries, been a highly sought after place to live in the centre of London epitomizing the notion of luxurious living. Burlington Gate has been carefully developed to follow these ideals and build on its colourful history as a centre for the arts and fine tailoring. During the early 18th century members of the British Aristocracy flocked to the area to socialise and shop for exquisite clothing and artefacts as well as enjoy the fine dining that was available. Little has changed today of course where the charm and elegance of the area has been improved and embellished.

Wealthy landed aristocrats such as the Grosvenor and Burlington families invested in building beautiful townhouses for the rich and famous people in their society.

The carefully laid out streets and squares and elegant buildings provide the attractive and unique character of Mayfair which is appreciated around the world today.

The Burlington family were greatly responsible for contributing to and influencing the Art scene by offering Burlington House to the Royal Academy of Arts in the 1780s. It was established with the purpose of offering a platform to English artists and architects. The mansion was finally donated to the Royal Academy in 1867 where it remains its home today.

It is currently the subject of a major refurbishment. The Academy is still one of the leading Art schools in the UK and every summer it puts on a much acclaimed Summer Exhibition to give a platform to new and emerging young artists. It is well attended by people from all over the world and remains a much loved and sought after event. The art spin off has led to a number of notable galleries being established in nearby Cork Street and Dover Street and the development of a community of art collectors and visitors to the many galleries.

At this time the Savile Row tailors established their trade in offering bespoke tailoring to the affluent inhabitants living in the area. They quickly gained international acclaim for being the finest in the world which continues today. In the mid 20th Century many a Rock Star has sought out their services and currently highly regarded tailors such as Richard James and Ozwald Boateng enjoy great popularity.

Bond Street has developed nearby as an excellent centre for a variety of fashionable shopping and the world’s finest jewellery makers including Aspreys, David Morris and Graff to name but a few. The street was named after Sir Thomas Bond who was notable patron who encouraged much of the wealthy society to visit the area and experience the finest of goods available at the time. The area grew exponentially to offer fine dining and hotel accommodation that was enjoyed greatly and still is today. A notable art and antiquity dealer Sotheby’s established its flagship house in Bond Street and where it continues to trade successfully today.

Bond Street attracts many international visitors for its haute couture fashion and jewellery with superb dining. There are new Bars and restaurants emerging all the time that offer a new experience to its affluent visitors.
